Caramelize a bag of onions (thinly sliced). Put a layer of spatzlen in a large flat bowl, layer some of the onions on top, add a layer of sliced Swiss cheese, then repeat with another layer of spatzlen, onions, cheese, repeat until the bowl is full, and heat up so the cheese melts. Serve with a good gravy. To die for.

Much tastier than skinnier noodles.

That is what my mom did when I was growing up as well. Very basic recipe….Flour, egg and a little salt and pepper to taste and she never heated them in a frying pan, although that sounds good.

Just add some butter to frying pan, add spätzle and pour beaten eggs over them. Mix and fry until eggs are done. Adding cheese makes it even better. I’m german and that’s how we made it.

I’m from Bavaria and that’s what we used. They are not as small and even but same taste. We didn’t have special tools.

You can also make “Kaesespaetzle” . Mix with sauteed onion and good cheese and pop into the oven. So good!

You can also use a cutting board, put some dough on it and with a knife quick “slice” the dough into the water.

The recipe was excellent and very easy to make. I had only eaten spaetzle one time before at a well-known German restaurant in my area and these tasted identical to the ones from there. This will be a staple in my household from now on!! I used a colander like in the video and it was definitely a two person job but the texture and size were great. Will be getting a spaetzle maker for the next time I plan to make this

I used a veggie pan for the grill that has 5/16 inch holes and a plastic deli container I cut the bottom out of, I’ve made speatzle before using the box grater and spatula and that was a little messy and more time consuming. Very little mess and easy clean up. Served it in some amazing Hungarian goulash.
