I doubled the cinnamon and orange, halved the clove and allspice, and added an extra 1/4 cup of brown sugar. Delicious.

This was absolutely delicious! I used granny smith with Gala and halved the brown sugar. It was amazing. The only reason it received a 4 is because it’s so much work at the end for little yield. I wish the recipe made double what it was after all the straining I did, but I also wondered if I mashed everything too much. Regardless, it was fantastic!

Did you mash the apples or just remove them completely?

The eight gala apples made a very tasty dessert. I canโ€™t believe the recipe says discard solids.
A lovely recipe which will be enjoyed at Christmas. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Allspice is one word and it is a berry.

I am so excited how amazing this recipe is and easy! I used honey crisp apples and I only had the ground allspice (added it with the SF brown sugar when I smashed up the apples). so delicious. Thanks for the instructions on freezing it too! I only needed 1/4 cup for a apple Sourdough bread I’ll be baking in a couple of days! So yeah, this recipe is a keeper! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Kelly! I just made this and also found it to be too watery. I’m going to add some lemon for tartness and boil it for an hour and we’ll see where we are.

Allspice refers to a berry that is dried and ground up, like other spices. It is NOT a combination of spices or a spice blend.

Loved this recipe! We made it the night before and woke up to the house smelling like apples and cinnamon. We left out the orange and it was the perfect level of sweetness. If anyone is worried about mashing up the apples, don’t be! The apples fall apart by the end of the cook time, and gently mushing them around with a spoon is really all that is needed.

We’ll definitely be making this a regular fall recipe :))

You can always add extra sugar if it is too tart.

The pith from the orange can be bitter. I took big strips of zest, then cut off all the white part. I thought the recipe was too heavy in cloves for my.taste, so I used just a.teaspoon.
